Abraham Munting

(1626-1683)

Was a Dutch physician and botanist who was appointed director of the Hortus Botanicus Groninganus from 1658-83.  His fascinating contribution to botanical knowledge was first published  under the title Waare Oeffening der Planten , with 40 engravings, Amsterdam  1672 .  A second edition being issued in 1682.  The third edition, which appeared in 1696, was retitledPhytographia Curiosa, and enlarged to include 245 engraved plates. 
             These unusual images typically feature plants depicted in front of a pastoral or classic landscape and accompanied by architectural ornaments such as scrolls, banners, or tablets.
