RARE. Published in Abraham Munting's Phytographia Curiosa, exhibens Arborum, Fruticum, Herbarum & Florum Icones, Amsterdam, 1696 - 1702, P25 (in manuscript, top right). A beautifully-composed image showing the runner as a giant beanstalk making full use of the copper plate, displayed in a landscape setting and the title being within an ornamental ribbon.

These unusual images typically feature plants depicted in front of a pastoral or classic landscape and accompanied by architectural ornaments such as scrolls, banners, or tablets.

Abraham Munting (1626 - 1683), was a Dutch physician and botanist who was appointed director of the Hortus Botanicus Groninganus from 1658 - 1683. His fascinating contribution to botanical knowledge was first published under the title Waare Oeffening der Planten, with 40 engravings, Amsterdam 1672, a second edition being issued in 1682. The third edition, which appeared in 1696, was retitled Phytographia Curiosa, and enlarged to include 245 engraved plates.
