Number 25 of the 1981 limited edition image of just 50 copies, which is titled and numbered (Bottom Left). The image is an interesting composition, as with many of the artist’s finer works. Here the starkness of Blackwood's deep blue imagery is relieved by the softer mushroom brown tones of the foreboding sky. The main focus of the image is the Whale weather vane that used to be atop the spire of the church at Safe Harbour, the only community in Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland that was involved with whaling. The Vane is depicted without its directional indicators as it was relocated to Blackwood's studio in Wesleyville. In the middle ground a man, child and dog are walking over the snow covered frozen ground. Icebergs and islets are seen in background over the dark waters of the bay.
A two page holograph letter signed by the artist 'David B' accompanies this work, written on David Blackwood inc. stationery from his King St. Port Hope home/studio 14 August 1988 it explains how David came to purchase the vane, minus it's directional indicators which were originally below the ball.
Blackwood is considered to be one of Canada's premier print makers and has been awarded many national and international awards. His work is included in National Galleries throughout the world and is represented in countless fine private collections. We are pleased to offer this scarce image to a discerning collector. Originally purchased from the artist into a private collection. It has had but one owner.
David Blackwood was born in Wesleyville, on Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland, in 1941. He grew up in an outport known for the captains and skippers it bred, known throughout Newfoundland and the nautical world for their seafaring skills, where education was highly valued and story telling was an art form. Listening to stories about the seal hunt and the lives of his neighbours, and the flora and fauna about him. These are the images and legends that David Blackwood has immortalized in his art. He has the ability to use visual images to tell tales that are sought the world over.

In this 1979 mixed media image, Aboard his ship (S.S. Algerine), caught in the icy fingered grip of early spring, an elderly Captn. Bishop gazes seaward over the gunwale and casts his mind adrift to envision a lovely women of his youth approaching him through mystical light, across the ice pans. One more memory of the harsh lifestyle of a bygone era in Newfoundland.
Captain Noah Bishop (1865- 1939) was born on Swains Island, Bonivista Bay, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada. S.S.Algerine is possibly the same Algerine that recovered one body following the search for victims of the Titanic.
