A la poupée
The term a la poupée means "with a doll", which refers to the wad of fabric, shaped like a ball. It is an intaglio printmaking technique for using different ink colors of ink using a ball-shaped wad of fabric to apply the ink to a copperplate. Paper is printed through just one run in the press.
'á la poupee´ is a time consuming process requiring many engravers, to stipple and line engrave the image, apply the ink colours directly to the plate, print in colours and finish each image by hand. The technique was first derived by Francesco Bartolozzi, but perfected by Redouté following their 1787 meeting in London.
