Roberts Colossi of memnon

David Roberts R.A.
Scottish
1796 - 1864

THE COLOSSI OF MEMNON SEEN FROM THE SOUTH WEST
[THEBES]

Subsequent to the repair of the northern colossus, it emitted a moaning sound , this strengthened the legend that identified the statues with Homer's hero, Memnon. To emphasize the scale Roberts has whimsically depicted his travelling companions scaling the colossus.
