By Thomas Rowden, British. 1842 - 1926
A beautifully naturalistic signed, original watercolour depicting
seven, well painted, wild Dartmoor Ponies about to refresh themselves
on a sunny day from a stream atop Dartmoor National Park, South
Devon, England.
Painted in his characteristic fresh, naturalistic
style, this is one the finest examples of his work we have seen.
Rowden
was a competent largely self-taught, landscape painter who exhibited
from 1884. His subjects were often of Cornwall, Dartmoor and
Devon, but he also enjoyed painting sheep and cattle in the highlands.
He exhibited two works in the Royal Academy prior to moving to
Exeter ca. 1890. Examples of his work may be found in Exeter
Museum.
