Painted four years prior to his death, this is the work of James Edwin Meadows at the height of his prowess and the finest composition of his that we have seen. A bucolic scene just outside of the town of Guildford, Surrey is depicted.  Most of Meadows landscape compositions have villager’s carts and houses in the middle or background this fine painting has the action and buildings front and centre making for a splendid composition of 'Merrie England', a genre at which Meadows excelled without being overly sentimental.
