This quiet byre interior scene celebrates the miracle of life, still a delight to any farming family no matter how frequently witnessed. In the early light of day, a milkmaid, or possibly the farmer’s wife, and her young daughter who maternally clutches her dolly,  gaze upon a resting young cow and her tiny (probably first born) calf. They rest on a newly straw strewn, paved floor, cow byre,  steam still rising from the recently ‘mucked out’ pile in the corner.
