Painted the year Winchell was elected a member of the Ontario Society of Artists, this painting reflects his fascination in the effects of light filtering through trees to create landscape patterns, in which Winchell Price specialized both in his oils and watercolour works, and through which he became a master at capturing the light of the changing Canadian seasons. Another particular delight being taken with ring necked pheasant, one of the latter being depicted rising over a rolling autumnal Southern Ontario landscape in this fine work. Having been in the hands of the same family since its purchase in 1941, the painted surface has become somewhat dulled by the passage of time, this painting would come alive again with the assistance of a professional conservator. On the verso are remnants of the original T. Eaton & Co. College St. gallery. The painting is set into its original hand carved gilt-wood frame.
