Many of Holmstedt's forthright and realistic style of paintings capture the dramatic Norwegian landscape of Sognefjord as does this. Clear blue summer sky and towering cliffs which dwarf the small cluster of houses are reflected in the clear cold water of the Fjord. The latter is a popular sailing destination for summer sailors.
Johann Holmstedt 1851-1929 was born in the village of Granvin on the Hardanger fjord, in the country of Hordaland in Norway. His talent was evident by the age of 10, but it was only after years in the service in the army that Holmstedt received artistic education. He lived and worked for most of his life in Berlin-Wilmdersdorf and spent his summers in Balestrand, as is reflected in his work.
