Gatja H. Rothe 1935 -
Born in Beuthen, Germany of strict Lutheran parents. Her earliest training was in drawing and goldsmithing under the tutelage of her jeweller father. In 1956 she not only continued working in gold, but studied techniques in drawing, painting and etching at the Design Academy of Pforzheim, She married her her teacher, Curt Rothe, in 1958. Ten years later, she won the Villa Romana Preis, one of Europe's most prestigious and coveted fellowships, which allowed her to work in Florence, Italy for a year, most of which she spend studying anatomical drawing. Thereafter, she travelled around Europe and South America for the remainder of the decade.
In 1970 she took up residence in New York and commenced serious exploration of the ancient medium of Mezzotint, of which she has become an undisputed master. Rothe is perhaps best known for her series of Dance studies, with her Horses executed between 1972-83, a close second. Her works are considered a tour-de-force on the international graphic art market. Between 1966-83 she has had some 14 one-man-shows in European, South American & American cities including New York, Chicago & Washington DC., examples of her works may be found in numerous state municipal corporate and private collections.
