A half-length medallion portrait of this notable
British Field marshal and statesman shown in full dress uniform,
with his striking handlebar moustache. Portrayed against the British
Flag with armorial shields, banner enclosing sword and palm frond
and surmounted by crest.
In 1896 he began the Anglo-Egyptian reconquest of the Sudan that
culminated in a victory at Omdurman (1898) During the final year
of South African War he secured the submission of the Boers, by
such controversial methods as interning civilians, and a scorched
earth policy.
Appointed Secretary for War during World War I.
His conduct of the war and vast expansion of the British army
strained relations with the Cabinet as his strategy resulted in
millions being sent to their death. He was drowned en- route to
Russia when his ship struck a German mine.
