This fine pair of watercolours depict a three-decker sailing-ship, the barque 'Coromandel' in mountainous seas. Enroute in January 1836, the ship was almost overwhelmed when caught in a hurricane.

Frederick  James ALDRIDGE   British  1850-1933 Off the Needles    Watercolour  Signed (Bottom Right) dated [19]21 [period gilt matt with title, glazed,  period ornate gilt-wood & gesso frame.  Image: 13 ¾  x 21 3/8" (35 x 54.3 cm)     frame: 20 ½ x 28" Ref. 663 RM2 (205)/ RNN /d.anar> OOL PRICE CODE D A Royal Naval Brigantine, with square sails set and commission pennant at the masthead, ply’s  its course through choppy seas  off 'the Needles', Isle of Wight, England.  The light house and chalk stacks may be seen in the background, along with the Totland coast and other shipping in Alum and Scratchel's Bays. This is a late example from the hand of the mature artist dated [19] 21 and reflects his mastery of the intimate details of ship's rigging and the subtleties of capturing the sea.

Remnants of older nets are seen suspended from poles at the shoreline. Further out in the bay other vessels may be seen plying their trade. The tower of an ancient church or abbey may be glimpsed upon the headland. This attractive painting is typical of the atmospheric marine style of Beverely's work.

GH1 (140)/DNN/ dd. ando>AOL   PRICE CODE B A ferry cargo boat is seen by a wharf as numerous small sailing vessels and small craft lie at anchor within a British harbour. Alas, we were unable to find any information on this competent 19>20 century artist.

Frame 19 x 25 ¼ ” Ref. 561 GH46 (140)/AAL/ dd.ands >GLN PRICE CODE C SOLD This is a finely detailed watercolour of the inshore fishing fleet laid up at low tide at the precipitously located Cleveland way, north Yorkshire, village of Staithes. As can be glimpsed from the defensive tidal walls, the beach is only accessible by ladder in parts. The steep streets of the village has changed little since Captn. Cook explored it as a boy. Law has caught the sense of isolation well in this fine painting.

Frame: 17 x 22" Ref. 598 RI 548/ELN/da.ands> SNN   PRICE CODE  D The ship is depicted under full sail, angled close reach, to take advantage of the wind, a cutter and a steam vessel are seen against the horizon. Shah fired the first torpedo to be used in anger.she was wrecked off Bermuda in 1926. Sold for scrap, her iron masts were fitted as replacement for HMS Victory’s in 1887.
