Acetosa Vesicaria Mexiocana

RARE. Published in Abraham Munting's Phytographia Curiosa, exhibens Arborum, Fruticum, Herbarum & Florum Icones, Amsterdam, 1696 - 1702, Fig 78. A beautifully composed image having the three sprays making full use of the copper plate, the principal being placed in a landscape setting with figures in the background, the title being within an ornamental ribbon. The remaining two sprays breaking through the typography.
These unusual images typically feature plants depicted in front of a pastoral or classic landscape and accompanied by architectural ornaments such as scrolls, banners, or tablets.

Abraham Munting (1626 - 1683), was a Dutch physician and botanist who was appointed director of the Hortus Botanicus Groninganus from 1658 - 1683. His fascinating contribution to botanical knowledge was first published under the title Waare Oeffening der Planten, with 40 engravings, Amsterdam 1672, a second edition being issued in 1682. The third edition, which appeared in 1696, was retitled Phytographia Curiosa, and enlarged to include 245 engraved plates.
